Time: 7:00 PM
Weisser Riesling, Rheinriesling, Riesling Renano, and Johannisberg Riesling — who knew?
Continuing with the “WV White Season,” July’s wine will be one of delicate sweetness. Yes, Riesling is best known as being a sweet wine, but many of you will be surprised to hear that there are also a number of dry varieties as well. As our taste buds are always in for that unexpected treat at our meetings, for those of you that do not particularly care for the sweet variety wines — have hope. You may just be surprised.
One important factor to keep in mind when purchasing your bottle this month is cost. Cheap, or shall I say, less expensive Riesling wines (nah – I’ll say cheap!) are a buyer beware red flag. Riesling is a late-ripening grape, and only has a moderate yield each year. In a nutshell, it can be a pain in the ass to grow, and often the price reflects this. A cheap Riesling may taste very sharp and be rather harsh in nature, but a well-grown Riesling will be a sweet, yet complex, white wine that ages very well.
Cheers,
