Event: April Tipple

Date: Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Location: Legal Beans, 86 Garden St (Newark & Garden), Hoboken, NJ

Time: 7:00 PM

Here’s how Pinot Noir is sensually expressed by the dialogue between Miles and Maya in the 2004 movie Sideways.

“it’s a hard grape to grow ... it’s thin-skinned, temperamental, ripens early ... it's not a survivor like cabernet, which can just grow anywhere and thrive even when it’s neglected. No, pinot needs constant care and attention ... it can only grow in these really specific, little, tucked- away corners of the world. And only the most patient and nurturing of growers can do it, really. Only somebody who really takes the time to understand pinot’s potential can then coax it into its fullest expression.”

Pinot noir grapes are grown in diverse locations around the world, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. For most of wine history, this two-mile-wide, thirty-mile-long stretch of hills, called the Côte d’Or (“Slope of Gold”), is the only region to achieve consistent success from the pinot noir vine. However, it is also It is also common in other areas like Germany, Switzerland, in Central and Northern California, Australia, Chile, Oregon, Canada and New Zealand.
